Kids Clothes Week - Project Two - Debbie's Tunic

Today is day four of Kids Clothes Week, and I am happy to show you my second completed project.

Debbie's Birthday Dress pattern by lovely Suz of Sewpony has become one of my favourite. I have already made two dresses for Little Monkey using this pattern. You can see them here and here. I love the timeless style of this dress.

Recently Suz made a few changes to the pattern, so I was keen to try out an updated version of the pattern.

While she was sleeping, I made a new tunic for my daughter using Debbie's Birthday Dress pattern. I used pattern pieces for View 2, just subtracted the seam allowance from the front dress piece and placed it on the fold. I also shortened the length of the dress to make this cute tunic.

I wanted to make a peter pan collar which is included in the pattern. This is my first peter pan collar. I know it is far from perfect, but Little Monkey did not complain.

My first KCW project was almost rejected by Little Monkey because there were no pockets or buttons on it. I made sure I sewed enough buttons on this tunic to keep her happy. As you can see, there are two buttons on the front. I chose this button for the back closure.

You should have seen Little Monkey's face when I showed her the button. Her eyes got even bigger and she had a huge smile of her precious little face. She said it was a very special button. She instantly wanted to put the tunic on and even requested a photo-shoot! It makes me happy when Little Monkey loves things I make for her.

I think the updated version of the pattern is great. If you like it you can grab a copy of this pattern for only $5 until the 31st of October.

  4. Smart thinking to add the buttons to the front as well. A cute little tunic... looks great with that fabric and the Peter Pan collar.

  6. Very cute, love the collar, fabric & tunic length. How would you compare the two versions? I haven't bothered updating, as the original fits Miss M fine, but I'm wondering if I should update after all, Miss A is more a longer leaner girl.

    1. Thank you Michelle. I loved the original version as well, and the fit was really good for my Little Monkey. She is also skinny and tall. The new version of the dress is a few cm longer, and I absolutely love the new fit around the shoulders/arms. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of LM with her arms up in her tunic so the difference is not noticeable in these photos. I think Suz will be happy to e-mail you an updated version. Personally I will stick with an updated version from now on.

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. it really is a great pattern and has a few very fun options :) This was my first go at making a peter pan collar, and I think I have worked out where I have gone wrong. I will need to make at least one more Debbie dress or tunic to try making a collar again hahahaha
